AmCham’s 20th Anniversary Celebration

AmCham Southwest 20th Anniversary Celebration

On Thursday, April 20th, 2017, AmCham Southwest’s 20th Anniversary Celebration took place at 6:30 pm at the JW Marriott Chengdu. There were nearly 200 guests in attendance, including the Consul General, Commercial Consul, other members from the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu, Consul Generals from New Zealand Consulate-General Chengdu and Singapore Consulate-General in Chengdu, the Manager of the Canadian Trade Office in Chengdu, the Mayor of Deyang City and his team, representatives from the Sichuan Provincial Department of Commerce and the Department of Justice, members of the Office of Foreign and Overseas Affairs, the Chengdu Investment Bureau, and the Mianyang Investment Bureau, as well as members of AmCham.

The evening opened with a spectacular Lion Dancing performance that invited the Consul General, Raymond Greene, and the Chairman of AmCham Southwest, Benjamin Wang, on stage for lion’s eye-dotting. Afterwards, the Consul General made a short presentation over the business climate in Chengdu and thanked AmCham for the role it has played in bettering that climate over the last 20 years. The CG was followed by Benjamin Wang, who, on behalf of AmCham’s BoGs and executive team, gave a warm welcome to and expressed gratitude towards our guests and sponsors. He also gave an overview of AmCham and reminisced on some of the events that have taken place over the last twenty years at AmCham.

The night continued with more informative presentations; Eli Sweet, the Vice Chairman of AmCham Southwest, explained several of AmCham’s programs, including the Trade Investment and Promotion Service, the White Paper, and the Corporate Social Responsibility programs. Eric Tsui, Board of Governors Officer of AmCham Southwest, gave the audience insight into the specific events that AmCham has hosted and participated in over the last two decades. Then, Zeng Gang, General Manager of Metlife, and Khan Sung, General Manager of JW Marriott Chengdu, both made short presentations on their companies and their appreciation of being AmCham members. They were followed by the Mayor of Deyang, who thanked AmCham for the event and shared with those in attendance information about investment opportunities in Deyang.

Throughout the evening, there were several performances that combined Chinese and Western elements; these included Lion Dancing, the traditional Sichuan Face-changing Opera, a Long Sleeve Dance, a jazz dancing performance, and a surprise guest dinosaur. The performances kept the audience engaged and entertained throughout the evening, and they especially appreciated all the photo ops that came from the dinosaur traipsing across the stage. The evening culminated with our 13 Lucky Draws, including a grand prize of a roundtrip ticket to America from Chengdu, sponsored by United Airlines. These Lucky Draws were made possible through the generous support of our sponsors: Chengdu Shang Shan Yue Xi Mom & Baby Center, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Chengdu, the JZ Hotel Emei, Rheem (China) Water Heater Co., Ltd, and United Airlines.

AmCham Southwest is grateful for all of the support it has received from members, friends, and sponsors over the last two decades, and is greatly looking forward to many decades to come. We will continue to work closely with the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu and other American chapters in China to promote economic, trade, and cultural exchanges, all while providing our members with high-quality services and events. Here’s to the next twenty!
